Many senior leaders aspire to serve on a corporate board. It’s a great way to leverage your expertise in a new way, grow professionally and make meaningful contributions to respected organizations. However, moving from hands-on leadership to an oversight role means leveraging your skills and experience differently.

Hear what it takes to land your first corporate board seat in this 45-minute virtual event.

Host:

  • Rick Brimacomb, Club E Minneapolis

Presenters:

  • Anne Sample, CEO, Navigate Forward
  • Patti O’Leary, Executive Consultant and Board Readiness Practice Lead, Navigate Forward
  • Shay Wyley, experienced board director and Navigate Forward Board Readiness alum

Networking and Preparation Are Key

During the livestream, “Are You Board Ready? How to Land Your First Corporate Board Role,” all three presenters provided inside perspective and suggestions, breaking down preparedness plans, traits of ideal board candidates and clarifying the commitment and workload associated with board roles.

In terms of the logistics of landing your first board role, Patti O’Leary stressed the importance of networking:

“Historically over 70% of board slots are not filled by search firms—they are filled by networking,” O’Leary said. “It is critical that if someone is interested in landing a board seat, that you really nurture, activate and target your network.”

Shay Wyley shared his experience serving on multiple corporate boards.

“You never know where that opportunity is going to come from,” Wyley said.
