July 1, 2009 WCCO 830 afternoon segment with Don Shelby

July 1, 2009
Teresa Daly and Mary Kloehn, co-founders and managing partners of Navigate Forward, Inc. were guest speakers on WCCO Radio 830 with Don Shelby.

The interview focused on social networking versus traditional face-to-face networking.  Don Shelby kicked off the discussion by talking about his experience with building relationships the old fashion way.  Mary and Teresa agreed that there is a difference between ‘connecting’ with people on-line, and ‘networking’ with people face to face.  Connecting is not networking.   In this new day of social media and on-line job boards you need to remember that 70% of all jobs are found and filled through networking – and 40% of those are filled through direct referral!  Social medial tools can offer easier ‘access’ to key decision makers and help you get a face-to-face meeting, but just connecting with someone on line does not allow you the opportunity to differentiate yourself or to be memorable.

Mary and Teresa were able to dispel some myths about Job Search on-line and using social media.

Myth #1 – Now that we have on-line tools, it isn’t as necessary or as efficient to network face to face.

  • Technology has changed the game.
  • Online tools are just that – tools that should enhance your networking efforts, not replace them.
  • Studies show that 70% of all jobs are found by networking and 40% of those are by direct referral.

Myth #2 – Responding to online job postings is the best way to find a job.

  • It is impossible to differentiate yourself and stand out when constrained by the online application process.
  • You are being screened by a computer software program, not by a decision maker.
  • On-line job postings may not be current or real.

Myth #3 – “Networking” on LinkedIn and Facebook will land me a new position.

  • Social media tools have reduced our degrees of separation.
  • These tools help make you aware of your access points.
  • It doesn’t replace face-to-face networking – effective networking is really about creating your buzz.
  • Social media may assist you in connecting with others, but it doesn’t make you memorable.
