May 28, 2009 WCCO 830 ‘Job Security’ segment with Randy Meir

Teresa Daly and Mary Kloehn, co-founders and managing partners of Navigate Forward, Inc. were guest speakers on WCCO Radio’s afternoon segment called ‘Job Security’ with Randy Meier.

Their remarks centered around their belief that with so many people on the job market today, there is a lot of advice that is going around.  Navigate Forward believes that much of this advice is old advice and that today is a new day and people need new advice and new tools to be successful.   Some of the tips that Mary and Teresa offered were:

  • Writing or updating a resume is not the first step – it is the last step.  Because people write their resumes before really doing the work of getting focused and understanding their differentiators, resumes have become too generic and don’t give job seekers a competitive advantage.

  • Develop your brand profile.  A resume is a snap shot backward, but a brand profile is a snap shot forward.  Like any product, you need to package yourself to set yourself apart and to help employers connect the dots between who you are and what they need.

  • Don’t let fear guide your decisions.  Unemployment brings uncertainty and many people jump at the chance to take a job and say they can do anything.  Saying you can do anything sounds desperate and will not help you sell yourself for the right job.

  • Network to sell yourself, not to ask for favors.  Many people network to gain free advice – better to use it as a chance to see your skills and develop a quality ‘buzz’ about you.
