Teresa Daly – Keynote speaker for the 2009 Spring Banquet
University of St. Thomas Accounting Club
Thursday, April 30, 2009 — Teresa Daly was invited to be the keynote speaker for the University of St. Thomas Accounting Club Spring Banquet on April 30, 2009. The 150 attendees included student, faculty, alumni, and company representatives. Teresa spoke on the topic of “Smart Strategies to Differentiate Yourself in the Job Market and On the Job” . Her high energy presentation offered advice that included:
- In today’s job market, there is a lot of advice out there. The reality is that much of this advice is old advice…..today is a new day and people need new advice and new tools to be successful.
- Writing and updating your resume should be your last step, not your first step when in a job search. When people don’t first take the time to develop their personal brand that will tell their story in a unique and compelling way, there is a tendency to end up with a resume that is too generic and will not differentiate them.
- Today, even with the internet and social media, most people get their jobs through networking. Effective networking is not about drinking coffee with everyone you know, it is about creating a buzz where you become memorable and people start talking about you.
- Some of the same advice applies when you are not in transition….build your brand, develop a great network, and do great work that sets you apart.
